Beginner's Guide to High Precision GNSS
Why precise coordinates need a frame, an epoch, and a height system
About This Series
Modern GNSS has become remarkably capable, and remarkably accessible. Today, engineers, surveyors, GIS professionals, roboticists, drone operators, researchers, and makers can achieve positioning performance that was once available only through specialized and expensive equipment.
This educational series exists to explain how modern GNSS actually works. Rather than focusing on a particular receiver or software package, these tutorials emphasize the standards, concepts, and workflows that apply throughout the GNSS industry.
Our goal is simple: if you understand the principles, you can confidently use almost any modern GNSS system.
How the Two Series Work
Series 1, Understanding Modern GNSS, is a single continuous narrative. Each chapter builds directly on the one before it, so it's meant to be read in order, start to finish.
The Companion Tutorials in Series 2 work differently. Each one is a standalone deep dive into a specific practical question, why an elevation looks wrong, where an RTK position actually comes from, which correction method to choose, and so on, going well beyond what Series 1 covers. They don't need to be read in numerical order. Pick whichever one answers the question you actually have. The numbering reflects the order they were written in, not a required sequence.
Our Philosophy
Open Standards First
Modern GNSS is built on internationally recognized standards such as RTCM, RINEX, NTRIP, ANTEX, NMEA, and the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). Understanding these standards makes you a better GNSS user, regardless of the equipment you use.
Vendor-Neutral Education
The concepts presented in this series apply to virtually any modern GNSS receiver. Whether your equipment comes from SparkPNT, Trimble, Leica, Topcon, Septentrio, Emlid, Hemisphere, CHCNAV, or another manufacturer, the underlying principles remain the same.
An Open GNSS Ecosystem
Professional positioning continues to advance through collaboration, interoperability, public reference networks, open data formats, and open-source software. SparkPNT actively supports this open GNSS ecosystem because shared knowledge benefits everyone.
Accessible Professional GNSS
SparkPNT exists to make professional GNSS more accessible through open standards, clear education, and affordable high-performance hardware.
About SparkPNT
SparkPNT develops professional positioning solutions while remaining committed to interoperability, open standards, and technical education. We believe the best users are informed users, and these tutorials are intended to serve as a long-term technical reference for the entire GNSS community.
